Structure Quadrants

On 1 + 1 = 11.

Accentuation has given us four new concepts:

  • Pro-Stillness pQ
  • Pro-Movement pM
  • Pro-Successiveness pSu
  • Pro-Simultaneity pSi

Each of those is still only a focused side of a pair. To go further we apply another operator — this time not inside a pair, but between accentuations that do not belong to the same pair.

Remember that we use concatenation to represent relations between concepts that do not belong to attribute pairs (or to other types of tightly interconnected components). You can read concatenation like this: Element A is IN THE PRESENCE OF Element B, and just their joined presence creates a particular quality. The word “No” only signals an abstract negation; the word “Home” refers to a place of residence. Concatenate them and you get “No home”, which opens a much denser set of associations — the feeling that you cannot call any place your home. In short, “abandonment”. The new quality is not the sum of the parts. It is what appears when the parts are held together.

  • STRUCTURE QUADRANT: Concatenation of two attribute accentuations, creating a potential interstitial state.

We’ll keep the same four birds — blue jay, sparrow, dove, and crow — across all four, each behaving true to its own nature rather than serving as an arbitrary stand-in.

Discernibility

Blue jays are creatures of habit: the same bird tends to return, year after year, to a yard or rooftop it has claimed. Picture one resting on yours, plumage held still enough to study. Years pass, and the same jay returns — its plumage now shifted with age and season. Neither moment alone would tell you much. Stillness without succession gives you detail but nothing to compare it against; succession without stillness gives you change too restless to read at all. Discernibility needs both: a phenomenon held still long enough to be read, and read again across a succession of such moments.

The same capacity shows up wherever a thing has to sit still, more than once, before it can be known. A physician who only ever sees a patient in motion will miss the lesion that shows at rest; one who sees them at rest only once will miss that the resting picture has changed. A cadastral line restaked over decades, a painting photographed in the same light every ten years, a clause reread after each amendment: these are discernibility at work.

  • Pro-Stillness ^ Pro-Successiveness = Discernibility
  • Symbolic form: pQ ^ pSu = D

Observability

A fledgling sparrow makes its first attempt at flight: a clumsy flutter that barely clears the nest’s edge. Any single attempt looks like failure, or luck, or nothing at all. It is only the succession of attempts — each flutter a little steadier, a little farther, than the one before — that lets us read the movement as learning to fly rather than random flailing. Observability is the intersection of Movement and Successiveness: movement becomes legible as a pattern only once it repeats.

A gait in a clinic, a price series, a phrase a student retries, a prototype taken through successive launches: none of these is readable as learning, or as trend, from a single frame of movement. You can freeze a stride and study it, but that is discernibility. Observability is what you have when the motion is allowed to happen again, and the again is what you watch.

  • Pro-Movement ^ Pro-Successiveness = Observability
  • Symbolic form: pM ^ pSu = O

Resolutivity

A dove alone, sitting still, is just resting. But when a whole dule of doves goes still on a wire at the same instant — settling together the moment a hawk’s shadow crosses the street — that shared, simultaneous stillness is what resolves the threat: safety in numbers, achieved in a single held beat. Resolutivity is the intersection of Stillness and Simultaneity: a challenge is resolved not by one element holding still, but by every relevant element holding still together.

A fermata is not one player pausing. A trading halt is not one desk going quiet. A classroom that stills together when an alarm sounds, a cluster pausing writes so a snapshot can be taken, a ceasefire that holds because both sides hold it at once: the challenge is settled by the simultaneous stillness, or it is not settled. One body at rest, while the rest keep moving, is only a rest.

  • Pro-Stillness ^ Pro-Simultaneity = Resolutivity
  • Symbolic form: pQ ^ pSi = R

Operativity

One crow flying south means nothing in particular. A murder of crows lifting off together, all moving the same direction as the cold sets in, is a migration — a coordinated act no single bird could perform alone. Operativity is the intersection of Simultaneity and Movement: motion becomes an operation only once it is shared, at the same moment, across everyone taking part.

A surgical team making an incision, a pit crew on a stop, a chamber rising for a vote, a consensus round in a distributed ledger: the motion is not the interesting part by itself. Isolated motion is just travel. Operativity is what you have when the travel is concurrent, and the concurrency is the act.

  • Pro-Movement ^ Pro-Simultaneity = Operativity
  • Symbolic form: pM ^ pSi = E

Now that the four quadrants are set, we are ready to assemble one of the most relevant sections of EIC: Interstitial Anatomy.
